Birding Expeditions
Our B&B Lodge is a paradise for birdwatchers, with almost 300 different spp of birds just in our backyard! Check our eBird List!
Nevertheless our expeditions will take you to other hotspots for birdwatching & photography, away from the crowds and touristy places! We could go look from Quetzals and Hummingbirds in the Cloud Forest to capturing the beauty of the King Vulture in the Lower Lands!. Each tour is carefully designed depending on the targets you have & the most biodiverse sites that surround the lodge!

Morning Birdwatching:
Starting every day at 6:00am birdwatching from the terrace with some local coffee and an appetizer. Then we go birdwatching along the road with the Children’s Eternal Rainforest in front of us, all the way to a permaculture farm Ojo de la Tigra, where we will check birds from a platform and the surroundings, to the secondary forest and foothills at the Manakin Trail, back to the Lodge where we will enjoy our breakfast.
- Duration: 2 -3 hours

Tody Motmot Quest:
Only 5 minutes away from the Lodge at the Children’s Eternal Rainforest hides the smallest of the Motmots, a rare and restricted distributed species. We call it "a ghost" for how elusive he is. We go for about 2.5 hours sometimes even more through secondary forest to try to find this bird.
- Duration: 2 -3 hours
- Tour time: 8:30am
- Minimum: 2 people
- Recommended ages: 11 - 80 yrs. old.

A visit to the Children’s Eternal Rainforest, Pocosol Biological Station:
One of the most biodiverse places on earth, a hotspot on eBird with +400 different species of birds. Home to the Umbrella bird, the Rufous-vented Ground Cuckoo and the Yellow-eared Toucanet, on our way there we can birdwatch from the car looking for White-hawks too. The trails offer a lush forest, so there is a chance of seeing other wildlife like mammals and reptiles.

Finca Luna Nueva Birding Experience:
An excellent location for birding! Here we will birdwatch from a Bamboo Tower! Over 250 birds have been recorded on their private reserve. It includes a primary rainforest of 126 acres, and 82 acres of secondary forest, fields and gardens, and features trails to explore.

Arenal Volcano Birding Hotspot:
A full-day experience is 1.5 hours away from the house, at the Observatory, where we will see birds on feeders, gardens & forest. We will of course get incredible views of the Volcano too. And a fancy lunch at the Jilguero Restaurant. We will have a chance to explore a museum of the Arenal History.This experience includes round trip transportation, a professional bilingual guide, entrance to the observatory, and lunch!

Quetzals & Hummingbirds Highlands Experience:
On this expedition we go searching for the Resplendent Quetzal and other highlands species such as Long-tailed Manakin, Bellbird (depending on the season), endemic hummingbirds like the Coppery-headed Emerald the largest hummingbird we have for the country The Violet Sabrewing, the Northern Emerald-Toucanet, the Black Guan. among other gems.

The third most important wetland in the country, off the beaten path, but worth the effort. We will travel for almost 3 hours to go on a boat expedition to see the most stunning aquatic birds and other wildlife such as caimans, turtles, monkeys, basilisks.

King Vulture Photography Hide:
We drive north the country for 1.5 hours off the beaten track of the common tourism to go & see the majesty of this incredible bird behind a hide. After photographing this colorful creature, we go and enjoy lunch (not included) next to the San Carlos River.

Sarapiquí: Atlantic Slope!
The Caribbean side of Costa Rica is a recognized destination for bird watching lovers. A truth Tropical Rainforest that is home of more than 500 different species, including hummingbirds, limpets, toucans, orioles, woodpeckers, quetzals among many others. There are a lot of points where you can admire these wonderful birds. In addition, there are facilities for experienced people and also for beginners, making an unforgettable experience!
